EPOCH: A ‘MOVE SLOW & MEND THINGS’ APPROACH TO CODING

Epoch: A ‘Move Slow & Mend Things’ Approach to Coding by Sophie Nadel explores the relationships between traditional and newly-emerging methods of making.

Beginning with a dataset of 5000 punch card designs, creative technologist Sophie Nadel uses a GAN system to generate typographic knitting patterns. The resulting typeface can then be knitted by hand or machine, completing the cycle between the computer-generated and the material. Through the lenses of textiles and typography, Epoch presents a model for how artists can utilise emerging technologies, without large AI models, to deeply connect with their tools as a knitter might pick out yarn for a project.
